Alternative Investment Fund or AIF means any fund established or incorporated which is a privately pooled investment vehicle which collects funds from sophisticated investors, whether Indian or foreign, for investing it in accordance with a defined investment policy for the benefit of its investors.
The AIFs usually have a high limit of minimum investment to the tune of INR 1 Crore or more. It is basically directed at high net worth individuals. The fund is raised from (HNIs) with a view to investing in accordance with a defined investment policy for the benefit of those investors.
